History
Alexander and Orva Thompson were deeply religious people. The Methodist Episcopal Church of Swars Prairie Community had it's beginnings in their home with the first preaching done there. It is not known exactly when the Swars Prairie Methodist Church was built but Alexander deeded the land for it on May 7, 1888, however, it is believed the church was built prior to this as it is referred to in the Methodist conference records of 1879. It is reported that their son, Thomas Leonard, hauled lumber 40 miles in an iron wheeled wagon for the church to be built. A school was known as Thompson Grove School. On October 10, 1889, he deeded 2 1/2 acres where his son was buried to be used as a burial ground for the public wit the east side to be reserved for family burying ground. April 10, 1903 Alexander Thompson died and was laid to rest close beside his son. On March 29, 1909, his wife, Orva, joined him. |
