Directions to cemetery from Neosho

Take Hwy 49 (in town) north. Turn west onto Waldo Hatler Memorial Dr.
At the intersection of Kodiak, Waldo Hatler Memorial Dr becomes Norway Rd. Stay on Norway Rd, pass under Hwy 49. Once you pass Goldfinch Rd watch for the entrance to the cemetery on the north side. Turn north onto the road. The cemetery is on the right side of the road.

Notes: Gene Adams, Neosho, Mo has a deed and the plat to the cemetery and is the contact person. The cemetery is no longer associated with the New Salem Church. It started with an acre donated by Hezekiah M. Martin (sometimes called the Martin C.) in
1871. Later, another 1 ½ acres was added and then another acre.

There are at least two interesting episodes in New Salem's history. After 1972, a cemetery at Hwy, CC and Maple was obliterated and Nathan Wilson's stone was moved to New Salem. Also moved were the stones of his widow, who married Wm. Hockersmith and Wm. Hockersmith. Despite the story, there is a chance the Hockersmiths were originally buried at New Salem. All three are in a row on the west side of the old part.

When work was started on "new" 60 in the late 1940's an old cemetery was found. The Hwy. Department bought an acre to add to New Salem and moved the six stones to the east part of the new section. Moved were a Bogle infant and a Reydman. Those stones cannot be found today. Hettie Creion's stone is there, but not on the list. It is a rough slab with the hand carved inscription - Hettie Crelon, born March 15, 1867, died Jan. 9, 1882.

The other three who were moved are Daniel Mott and two Stonemans.
